Yesterday Defra published a new report saying that ‘Computers, televisions and other electrical products plugged in but not in use or left on standby cost the UK up to £1.3 billion in electricity bills every year.’
The solution already exists. Turn the appliance off at the wall. And for the super lazy (like me), you can get remote control sockets, either with their own remotes, or which will work off the TV remote (I use one myself).
Now a bloke called Steve Nicoll has invented a ‘cap for the standby button (see picture).
On Twitter, @WillN-BG responded to the press release with ‘This has to be a joke: £3.99 for a piece of plastic stopping you using the standby button?! Whither self-restraint..? ‘

It gets better. This bit of plastic is being promoted on Twitter by ‘Khazi shack’ without a sense of irony.
