One biomass protest got (some) support
Of all the protests organised by single-issue campaign group Biofuelwatch, their protest in Scotland two weeks ago actually managed to get some MSPs out of Holyrood.
According to reports, ‘A demonstration coordinated by organisations Biofuelwatch, No Leith Biomass Campaign, Friends of the Earth Scotland and Grangemouth Community Council was joined by MSPs as they attempted to persuade the Scottish Government to reduce the “heavy subsidies” given to biomass plants.’
Hang on, seeing that Scotland wants to stop subsidising large biomass for power production under the Scottish RO (a subject which is another blog all on its own), this seems like a bit of an easy win. It also makes the campaigners claim that Ayrshire Power could make £91 million a year from co-firing subsidies odd. Surely they are confident that the Scottish Government will implement its plans, meaning the subsidy will not be available.
Even with the support of MSPs, this video only appears to show 13 people and 1 tree attending the protest. Given that it was organised by four campaign groups, this doesn’t seem very many…
Tip, if these NGO’s have loads of support, then why don’t they take some pictures showing just how many people were present?
